McDonald’s Pokémon Collections – Promotional Sets Overview

Since 2002, McDonald’s has partnered with The Pokémon Company to release exclusive promotional cards as part of its Happy Meal campaigns. These McDonald’s Pokémon Collections feature reprinted cards—often with unique holofoil patterns or McDonald’s stamps—as well as exclusive promos tailored for young collectors and Pokémon fans.

Each annual release typically includes a mini-set of cards, often highlighting starter Pokémon from various generations. These cards are usually non-competitive but highly collectible due to their limited availability and nostalgic appeal. Over the years, the McDonald’s promos have become a fun and accessible way for kids and collectors alike to enjoy the Pokémon TCG.

With distinct releases nearly every year from 2002 to 2025, these McDonald’s promos have evolved into their own beloved tradition within the Pokémon collecting world.

Pokémon-sanctioned events, such as local leagues and tournaments. Prize Packs include holofoil-stamped reprints from recent sets, marked with a unique Play! Pokémon stamp.

Each wave corresponds roughly with a TCG season:

Basic Energy Cards – Core of the Pokémon TCG

Basic Energy cards are the essential building blocks of every Pokémon TCG deck. These cards provide the Energy needed to use attacks, retreat Pokémon, and activate abilities during battle. Unlike Special Energy, Basic Energy cards have no extra effects—but they are unlimited in deck construction and play a fundamental role in competitive and casual play.

The 9 Basic Energy Types:

  • Grass

  • Fire

  • Water

  • Lightning

  • Psychic

  • Fighting

  • Darkness

  • Metal

  • Fairy (discontinued after Sword & Shield)

While the gameplay function of Basic Energy has remained consistent, their artwork has evolved across generations, featuring various designs from early blocky borders to full-art landscapes in modern sets. Many collectors enjoy tracking the different styles, holofoil versions, and special releases of Basic Energy, such as League promos, Trainer Kits, or Elite Trainer Boxes.

Whether you're building a deck or completing a set binder, Basic Energy cards are an iconic and essential part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game.

Pokémon World Championships Decks – A Legacy of Champions

Since 2004, the Pokémon World Championships Decks have offered fans a unique glimpse into the highest level of competitive play. Released annually, these preconstructed 60-card decks replicate the exact builds used by top-performing players in the World Championships across various age divisions. Though not tournament-legal, these decks are printed with distinct silver borders and special card backs, making them ideal for casual play and competitive study.

Each year's release typically includes four championship decks, each named after the player and often themed with a creative deck title. These decks showcase metagame-defining strategies, featuring powerful Pokémon, efficient Trainer cards, and innovative combos that shaped the global competitive scene during that season.

Key Features:

  • First released in 2004, with sets issued annually (except 2020–2021, due to the pandemic).

  • Includes Junior, Senior, and Masters Division champion or finalist decks.

  • Deck cards are marked with a “World Championships” back and cannot be used in official tournaments.

  • Packaging includes a player booklet, deck box, and pin or collector’s case (varies by year).

The World Championships Deck series has become a favorite among players and collectors alike—offering both a historic record of top-tier play and a great resource for learning the game at its highest level.
